Personal Statement
Over the last 30 years, I have gained a great deal of experience and expertise in professional development and what would now be called life-long/life-wide learning. In my "second career" I teach, learn and manage/participate in EU-funded projects, especially in Vocational Education and Adult Education.
ICT Interests
Having started with computers in education in the late '70s just prior to the PC/Mac era, I have few illusions on the challenges facing those who want to promote change through the use of ICT in learning. First, ICT is a good thing when it promotes learning, it is not an end in itself. The system you have now will be obsolete in a short time - software to solve problems and promote development is more important than the latest gizmos. Having said this, I believe that the world of online learning can extent learners reach and grasp in ways that were inconceivable 10 years ago. The main proviso that I see is that teachers (and other "adults") should recognise that ICT is a revolutionary force - this is not an excuse for "ageism" witness the growth of ICT use by the "retired" population. This means that if teachers (like me) are to be part of the solution, rather than part of the problem, we need to be humble and recognise the power of Situated and Collaborative Learning. Recent Projects
Developing systems and pedagogies to support teaching and learning online. Developing systems for people to have their experiential learning and acquired skills recognised for academic credits. We are increasingly doing this for adults, why not for children?
