Personal Statement
After graduating in Mathematics and Electrical Sciences at Cambridge University, and a spell with EMI Records, Douglas has taught mathematics for 30 years.
In 2000 he founded the iCT Training Centre, at Oundle School (Peterborough, UK), which he combines with managing the development of the mathematics software Autograph.
He is a keen dinghy sailor and pianist.
ICT Interests
To support his training, Douglas keeps up with ICT developments in mathematics, but also music and science, and runs a number of web sites from his tsm-resources page.
From Oundle he runs a busy program of TSM Workshops for teachers in the UK and abroad (Technology for Secondary Mathematics). The course he likes delivering the most is entitled How to make Word Mathematically friendly. He has to date also run four workshops on technology for teaching music. He actually programmed the first Acorn version of Autograph himself all in BBC-BASIC, but is glad now to leave the sophisticated world of object-oriented C++ to the Autograph programming team.
Recent Projects
Douglas' main activities have recently centred around running workshops for teachers in the UK and abroad, and sharing ideas on using ICT in the classroom by speaking at conferences.
See, for example, an interview in the Mumbai Sunday Times (India) and his report on ICT in Education in India.
In February 2006 he was the introductory keynote speaker at the big Texas Instruments' T³ Conference in the Colorado Convention Center, Denver, USA (see also MirandaNet Members' News Report).
In September 2006 he was the curtain raiser at the Mathematical Association of NSW Annual Conference in Sydney. See MANSW report (see also MirandaNet Members' News Report).
Each July, he runs the TSM 3-day residential workshop (Technology for Secondary Mathematics) based at Oundle School in Northamptonshire.
Publications
Using the Internet, Mathematics (revised 2002) - Pearson Publishing, Cambridge
Autograph, dynamic mathematics software: latest version 3.10, June 2005 - Eastmond Publishing Ltd
During 2006, translations of Autograph into various languages will be published: French, Italian, German, Spanish, Korean and Chinese. This has already provided a fascinating insight into notational differences and curriculum variations.
